Just across the border with Austria lies Villach, a lovely small Austrian town with roots bаck іn Roman times. Villach boasts a large number of sights of historical interest and its old town center (which is called Altstadt) is one of the most picturesque in southern Austria. A great place to start exploring Villach is the long Main Square (known as Hauptplatz), which cuts across the middle of the old town. There’s a bridge over the Drau at Main Square’s north end, and the Parish Church is at the south end. Like most towns of its size, Villach has a Trinity Column which stands in the middle of the square and dates from 1739, commemorating deliverance from the plague. A must see is the Heilige Kreuz church which is among the most beautiful sacred Baroque-style buildings in Austria. Also, well worth a visit are the Parkhotel and Parkcafé Villach that were built in 1910/11 and have been hosting major social events ever since. In Villach, you’ll also find plenty of local shops, bars, restaurants and museums.
To visit Villach, you can go through the Karawanken Tunnel or over the Wurzen Pass.
