This is a charming little castle built on a precipice above the town of Bled, overlooking Lake Bled. The views from the castle over the lake and town to the mountains beyond are really spectacular. You have to pay an entrance fee to get into the grounds of the castle, but it is well worth it. The museum in the castle is really interesting and there is a blacksmiths forge, old printing room and a small chapel. Throughout the year, but especially in the summer months, the castle hosts numerous interesting events.
It is the oldest Slovenian castle and is currently one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia. The castle is opened from January to March between 8.00 and 18.00, from April to June 14 between 8.00 and 20.00, from June 15 to September 15 between 8.00 and 21.00, from September 16 to October 31 between 8.00 and 20.00, and in November and December between 8.00 and 18.00. Entrance fee is €9 (students €7, children €4,5). You can walk up to the castle from the lake (it takes a good 15 minutes and is not too easy), you can get there by car (there’s parking at the top) or you can take a bus.
We would recommend that you plan your visit around dinner time and indulge in a delicious meal at the castle’s fine dining restaurant. Your entrance fee to the castle will be waived if you have a dinner reservation. Like with many locations in Bled, you’ll be treated to a sweeping vista of the lake and the island below you (without even having to get up from your dinner table).
