Savica Waterfall

Waterfall Savica is possibly the most famous and the most beautiful and dramatic waterfall in Slovenia. Some say it is ‘too touristy’, but there is a reason a place is ‘too touristy’ and that reason is because the place is so incredibly beautiful. Why should not as many people as possible enjoy it?

The Savica waterfall is located at the far end of Lake Bohinj, about 40 minutes drive from Bled, with lots of parking (€3 to park) and two restaurants. You then have a fairly steep climb of about 20 minutes to reach the waterfall along the many steps – the route is not suitable for those with walking problems or in wheelchairs. The entrance fee of €3 is used to keep the approach to the falls well maintained and protected. At the top, a small viewing platform allows you to view the falls and take great photos. There is also a short walk beyond this to a locked gate where you can get a closer view. Overall, a trip to the Savica waterfall is a must see if you decide to visit the Lake Bohinj area. At the car park there is also a souvenir shop and a little café selling nice coffee and pastries.

Quick facts about the Savica Waterfall:

– Height of the large waterfall: 78 meters (256 ft)
– Height of the small waterfall: 25 meters (82 ft)

From the mountains of the Julian Alps to Lake Bohinj, one of the routes that water can take is through the Savica River. The water emerges out of underground via a fault forming the Savica waterfall. With two falls at 78 meters (256 ft) and 25 meters (82 ft) high, it forms a rough shape of A against the white/grey limestone and collects into a beautiful jade green pool. Clear jade green water falling down against white/grey rocks is a really unique view, even more, if you take into account the relaxing surrounding nature and the nice cold breeze, which cools you down on hot summer days. (photo: Jost Gantar / slovenia.info)

  • Very dramatic and beautiful waterfall. Wooden viewing structure at the top, from where you have a great view of the waterfall but also back down to the lake. Stone stairs most of the way to this very picturesque waterfall. Be careful if taking small children to the falls. There are railings where they are needed but it is not difficult to climb through them, so watch the small ones as you go as there are steep drops all along the route.
