Trenta Valley

Located in the heart of the Triglav National Park, the Trenta valley is remote from the everyday hustle-and-bustle of city life. The valley is known for its natural beauty and wide choice of adventure activities. It’s a valley where the source of the Soca river is. Soca is considered as one of the most beautiful rivers in Slovenia and the source of the Soca is ranked as one of the most stunning karst springs in Slovenian Alps. It’s a place of unspoiled nature with a healthy if harsh climate. Natural and cultural attractions are located along the entire length of the Trenta valley and you can choose between various points of interest including: the Kugy monument, the source of the Soca river, the Mlinarica trough, the Alpinum Juliana botanical garden, and the Triglav National Park information centre at Log, which features an interesting presentation of Slovenia’s only National Park with an accompanying collection of folk art.

Trenta valley

The source of the Soca river
The beginning of one of the most beautiful rivers in Slovenia. A small waterfall which appears out of the mountainside. It’s difficult to see, hard to photograph, but this is the source of the river Soca.

Soca Gorge
Soca Gorge is located immediately before the village of Soca (approximately 10 km from Trenta), by the road from Bovec to Trenta. The trough is 750 meters long, 15 meters deep and in sometimes with river banks only 2 meters apart. It could be seen from a footbridge.

Mlinarica trough
The picturesque Mlinarica gorge with steep high walls is an important natural attraction in the Triglav National Park. The Mlinarica torrential stream has carved a 1 km long and 100 metres deep gorge, which narrows down into breathtaking troughs just before its confluence with the Soca river. One of the most amazing parts of the gorge is the 8 meters high fall to the mouth of the troughs. To access it, park your car in the large parking lot on the left side of the the Bovec–Trenta–Vrsic road about 500 meters before the 49th bend on the Vrsic road. Across the road you will see a marked trail for viewing the lower course of the Mlinarica and the gorge.

Alpinum Juliana alpine botanical garden
The Alpinum Juliana alpine botanical garden is Slovenia’s first and only Alpine botanical garden in natural surroundings. It was founded in 1926 by Albert Bois de Chesne. It’s protected as a monument of landscaped nature and a natural treasure of national importance. This stunning botanical garden hosts almost all existing Alpine botanical species (over 600) , including Scabiosa Trenta, the flower to which famous mountaineer from Trieste, Mr. Julius Kugy, dedicated great part of his life. It is located an altitude of some 800 m, covering an area of 2572 m². You can visit the garden via the Bovec-Trenta road. Near the church of the Virgin Mary of Loreto, there is a clearly visible signpost for the garden on the right.
The garden is open from 1st of May till the 30st of September, daily from 8:30 to 18:30. Entrance fee is €3.

It’s Slovenia’s only Alpine botanical garden in natural surroundings. It’s open from May until the end of September. Best time to visit are end of May and beginning of June. Triglav National Park Information Centre
At the information center you can visit an exhibition on the natural features of the Trenta Valley and the Soča Valley, and in the Trenta Museum you can learn about the rich cultural and ethnological heritage of the region. Open all year except between November 1st to December 26th (from December 27 until April 26 from Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 14.00; from April 27 until June 30 from 10.00 to 18.00; from July 1 until August 31 from 9.00 to 19.00; from September 1 to October 31 from 10.00 to 18.00). Entrance fee is €5.
